Police Withdraw Lagos Taskforce From Traffic Enforcement Duties
The Lagos State Police Command has ordered the immediate withdrawal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit, commonly known as the Taskforce from all traffic control and enforcement operations across the state.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, as part of ongoing efforts to streamline traffic management and enhance professionalism, accountability, and operational clarity among enforcement agencies.
In a statement released in Ikeja, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that the decision takes immediate effect and applies to all traffic-related duties previously handled by the Taskforce.
Over the years, the unit has maintained a strong presence at major intersections and congestion-prone areas in Lagos, enforcing traffic laws alongside its broader mandate of addressing environmental and special offences. However, its operations have also faced criticism over overlapping responsibilities and enforcement practices.
Adebisi clarified that the withdrawal is strictly limited to traffic control, noting that the Taskforce will continue to carry out its other statutory responsibilities without disruption.
She added that the move is part of broader institutional reforms aimed at ensuring traffic management is handled exclusively by designated authorities, while also reducing inter-agency friction and improving coordination.
The Command further cautioned residents against labeling all enforcement bodies as “Taskforce,” emphasizing that multiple agencies operate within the state under distinct mandates. It urged motorists and the public to verify the identity of officials before lodging complaints or making allegations.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the Police Command stated that all operations within the state will continue to align with established laws and best practices.
