Remi Tinubu Inaugurates 50 CNG Buses, Launches ₦1bn Empowerment Scheme In Edo

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has inaugurated 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses in Edo State as part of efforts to improve public transportation and ease mobility for residents.

She also launched a ₦1 billion economic empowerment programme targeting 5,000 beneficiaries to support small businesses and strengthen livelihoods across the state.

The initiatives were unveiled on Thursday during her visit to Edo State, where she commended Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration for prioritising affordable transportation and economic opportunities for residents.

Speaking at the event, the First Lady described the initiatives as commendable efforts towards improving living conditions and promoting economic growth, particularly among women, youths and vulnerable groups.

“I am glad to be in Edo today for the commissioning of 50 Compressed Natural Gas buses for the benefit of the people,” she said.

On the empowerment programme, Oluremi Tinubu explained that each of the 5,000 beneficiaries would receive ₦200,000 to strengthen their businesses, improve their livelihoods and promote financial independence.

She expressed optimism that the financial support would translate into sustainable business growth and improved economic opportunities for the recipients.

“I pray that the monies received will prosper in your hands and grow your businesses,” she added.

Earlier, Governor Okpebholo described the First Lady’s visit as a demonstration of care, compassion and commitment to the welfare and development of the people of Edo State.

He said the inauguration of the CNG buses and the launch of the empowerment scheme addressed two critical needs of residents: access to affordable transportation and financial support for small businesses.

According to the governor, the CNG buses are expected to make public transportation more accessible, affordable and efficient, while offering an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fuel-powered transport.

He added that the economic empowerment programme would strengthen the activities of small-business operators and create opportunities for beneficiaries to expand their enterprises.

“When you empower a woman, you strengthen a family, uplift a community and contribute to the prosperity of society,” Okpebholo said.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of good governance, economic opportunities and development reached communities across the state.

“Our commitment is to build an Edo State where good governance is felt in every home, opportunities are within the reach of every citizen, and no community is left behind,” he said.

The two initiatives form part of the state government’s efforts to improve transportation services, support entrepreneurship and promote inclusive economic development in Edo State.
