Residents, Motorists Lament Abandoned Sango Bridge Road Projects

Residents, motorists and pedestrians in Sango, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, have expressed frustration over the continued abandonment of road construction projects around the Sango Bridge axis, saying the situation has worsened traffic congestion and caused hardship for commuters.

A visit to the area revealed that the road construction work stretching from the Joju end towards the Sango Bridge, as well as the route inward from Ifo, has been left unattended for several months, leaving the affected sections impassable.

The abandoned portions of the road have reportedly been taken over by traders, while commercial tricycle and motorcycle operators have converted areas around the barricades into makeshift loading points.

Further compounding the situation, a section of the road beneath the bridge linking the Ijoko Road axis with the Idiroko Expressway has remained blocked, forcing motorists to drive against traffic and contributing to severe congestion in the area.

The gridlock has been worsened by another construction project around Sango Bus Stop, opposite the popular Sango Market, which residents said has also been inactive for about six weeks.

Following recent heavy rainfall, flooding around Joju Bus Stop reportedly brought traffic movement in the area to a standstill, leaving many commuters stranded for hours. Motorists who attempted to use the under-bridge route as an alternative discovered it was inaccessible due to the abandoned work.

A motorist, Olalekan Joseph, described the situation as unfortunate, calling on Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to prioritise the completion of the projects before the end of his administration.

Joseph said the poor state of the roads had turned Sango into a difficult route for commuters despite its strategic location as a major link between Ogun and Lagos states.

“This axis connects Lagos and Ogun and also serves as a route towards Idiroko, yet the pace of work is extremely slow. The government should ensure that these projects are completed to ease the suffering of residents and motorists,” he said.

Also speaking, Convener of Make Ogun State Great Again (MOGA), Kayode Olawoye, criticised the condition of the roads, describing the abandoned projects as a major setback to economic activities in the area.

Olawoye said poor road infrastructure affects businesses, movement and the general wellbeing of residents, urging the Ogun State Government and contractors handling the projects to accelerate work.

He questioned the slow pace of construction, noting that the continued blockage of major routes had created unnecessary hardship for road users.

Reacting to the concerns, Ogun State Commissioner for Works, Ade Akinsanya, directed enquiries to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade.

Akinsanya, in a brief message, advised that the construction site should be visited to understand the nature of the ongoing work.

Residents have continued to appeal to the state government and relevant contractors to complete the projects urgently and restore normal traffic flow along the busy Sango corridor.
