Sanwo-Olu Orders Immediate Road Rehabilitation Across Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) to commence immediate reconstruction and rehabilitation of deplorable roads across the state as part of efforts to address infrastructure challenges and improve transportation.

The directive is aimed at taking advantage of the dry season to accelerate road repairs and deliver more durable infrastructure for residents and road users.

The General Manager of LSPWC, Engr. Tokunbo Ajanaku, disclosed this on Thursday during an inspection tour of ongoing road projects across several local government areas and local council development areas (LCDAs) in the state.

Ajanaku said Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area was among the major beneficiaries of the intervention, with reconstruction work ongoing on Godwin Omonuwa Road, Taiwo Street, Salamotu Street, Peter Agah Street and Ibeh Street.

He explained that the projects were initiated on the governor’s directive to address critical infrastructure deficits and improve connectivity within communities.

According to him, the rehabilitation of the roads would ease movement, enhance safety, reduce transportation costs and stimulate commercial activities by providing a more conducive environment for residents, traders and business owners.

“These roads are important links within the Oshodi-Isolo axis, serving residents, traders, business owners and other road users daily,” Ajanaku said.

He added that the reconstruction projects were expected to improve mobility and strengthen economic activities within the affected communities.

Beyond Oshodi-Isolo, the inspection covered several other road rehabilitation projects, including Ogunnusi Road in Ojodu LCDA, Awolowo Way in Ikeja Local Government Area, Lanre Awolokun Road and Idowu Olaitan Street in Somolu Local Government Area, as well as Idimu-Ikotun Road in Alimosho Local Government Area.

The LSPWC boss explained that although persistent rainfall had limited asphalt laying during the rainy season, the corporation maintained emergency palliative repairs on critical roads to ensure they remained motorable.

He said the improved weather conditions had now enabled the agency to intensify comprehensive rehabilitation and reconstruction works aimed at providing longer-lasting solutions to road deterioration across the state.

Ajanaku further disclosed that the corporation was carrying out a significant portion of its maintenance and asphalt-laying activities at night to minimise traffic congestion in Lagos, particularly in busy areas.

He noted that the operations were being conducted under established safety protocols to protect workers and road users while ensuring that construction activities caused minimal disruption to traffic.

The general manager appealed to residents to remain patient as the rehabilitation programme progresses, explaining that roads were being prioritised based on their condition, traffic volume and the urgency of the required interventions.

He assured residents that the repair and rehabilitation exercise would be extended progressively to other parts of Lagos State as the government continues efforts to improve road infrastructure and ease transportation challenges.
