OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, has confirmed a tanker explosion that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, December 17, 2025, along the Temu–Sabo route near the Bypass Pobona area of Epe, Lagos State.
The incident, which happened at about 2:05 a.m., was reported to the FRSC at approximately 2:10 a.m., prompting an immediate response by operatives of the Epe Unit Command, who arrived at the scene within minutes.
Speaking on the development, the Sector Public Education Officer, Superintendent Route Commander (SRC) Oluwadamilola Jayeola, said preliminary investigations revealed that a commercial MACK tanker was involved in the explosion, alongside five other vehicles, bringing the total number of affected vehicles to six.
Jayeola explained that the crash was attributed to brake failure, which led to loss of control and a lone crash that resulted in the subsequent explosion. She added that although two adults were involved in the incident, no injuries or fatalities were recorded.
Following the explosion, FRSC operatives swiftly established traffic control to prevent secondary crashes. The Corps also worked in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Lagos State Fire Service, which successfully contained and extinguished the fire.
To ensure quick clearance of the affected area, a private tow truck was placed on standby to facilitate the recovery of the damaged vehicles and remove obstructions from the roadway.
Meanwhile, the Sector Commander, FRSC Lagos Sector Command, Corps Commander Kehinde Ganiyu Hamzat, reiterated his call on motorists, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to prioritise regular and comprehensive vehicle maintenance, with particular attention to braking systems, before embarking on any journey.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos Sector Command of the FRSC to prompt emergency response, effective traffic management, and the protection of lives and property on the state’s roads.
