Two Killed, Three Critically Injured As Dangote Mixer Truck Crashes Into Vehicles At Iyana Meiran

OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos

Two persons lost their lives while three others sustained critical injuries following a multiple-vehicle collision involving a Dangote silo mixer truck at Iyana Meiran, inward Meiran Road, near the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Meiran, Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the tragic incident occurred when the mixer truck, reportedly travelling at high speed, suffered a brake failure and lost control.

The out-of-control truck rammed into a commercial mini-bus, popularly known as Korope (registration number EPP 541 YF), and four tricycles (Marwa) with registration numbers KTU 360 QN, LND 444 QL, LSR 444 QN and EKY 122 QP.

The impact caused extensive damage to the affected vehicles, leaving several commuters trapped in the wreckage. LASTMA officials, in collaboration with public-spirited passersby, swiftly mobilised to the scene and carried out rescue operations, successfully extricating three critically injured victims from the crushed vehicles.

To prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of emergency responders, LASTMA cordoned off the affected corridor and implemented traffic diversion and control measures. In line with inter-agency emergency response protocols, officers of the Meiran Police Division were promptly alerted, with the Divisional Police Officer leading a team to provide security support during the rescue and recovery operations.

However, the driver of the Dangote mixer truck reportedly fled the scene shortly after the crash.

The injured victims were immediately conveyed to Mobonke Hospital along Meiran Road for urgent medical attention, while the remains of the two deceased persons were handed over to the Nigeria Police, who arranged for their evacuation by ambulance.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property on Lagos roads.

Mr. Bakare-Oki also warned motorists, particularly drivers of heavy-duty and articulated vehicles, to ensure that their vehicles—especially braking systems and other critical mechanical components—are thoroughly inspected and certified roadworthy before embarking on any journey. He stressed that excessive speeding and mechanical negligence remain major and avoidable causes of fatal road crashes.

LASTMA appealed to all road users to exercise caution, comply with traffic regulations and prioritise vehicle roadworthiness in the interest of public safety across Lagos State.
