AYÓMIDE TIWATAYO, Lagos

The Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, on Thursday inspected ongoing construction work on the new Carter Bridge in Lagos as part of efforts to monitor the progress of major Federal Government infrastructure projects in the state.

Umahi, accompanied by senior officials of the Ministry of Works, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Olufemi Dare, and representatives of the contractor, assessed the level of work at the bridge construction site.

During the inspection, the minister engaged the site engineers on the progress of construction and sought updates on the various activities, engineering processes and technical methods being deployed on the project.

He stressed the importance of strict compliance with approved construction standards and specifications, urging the project team to ensure that the bridge was delivered to the required quality.

Umahi also appealed to motorists and other road users operating around the construction area to exercise caution and drive safely as work continued on the strategic infrastructure project.

The minister subsequently proceeded to sections of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to assess ongoing construction activities and the level of progress on the project.

During the inspection, Umahi also examined portions of the highway reportedly affected by vandalism by hoodlums. He inspected the affected areas and received briefings from officials on the condition of the road, the extent of the damage and ongoing efforts to sustain construction activities.

The inspection formed part of the Ministry of Works’ monitoring of major Federal Government road projects in Lagos, with emphasis on construction progress, adherence to engineering standards and the protection of critical infrastructure.

The Carter Bridge and Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway are among the major infrastructure projects being implemented to improve connectivity and support transportation and economic activities in Lagos and other parts of the country.
