Lagos Announces Traffic Diversion As Independence Bridge Undergoes Repairs
The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion plan on the Independence Bridge as the Federal Ministry of Works begins urgent repair works on the bridge from Friday, October 16, to Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The diversion is aimed at facilitating asphalt repairs on the bridge while ensuring that motorists can continue to access their destinations during the maintenance period.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Lagos State Ministry of Works, the government said the repair works would take place at night on Friday, continue throughout Saturday, and be completed on Sunday.
According to the schedule, the asphalt works will commence on Friday night, October 16, and continue during the day and night on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18.
The government explained that traffic management measures would involve the partial closure of sections of the bridge, with one lane remaining open at a time to allow motorists to move through the affected areas.
Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys ahead of the repairs and consider alternative routes to minimise delays and inconvenience.
The statement, issued by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, also confirmed that officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would be deployed to manage traffic and ensure the smooth movement of vehicles throughout the repair period.
The government urged motorists to remain patient, obey traffic regulations, and cooperate with traffic management officials as the intervention progresses.
The repair exercise forms part of efforts to address urgent maintenance needs on the bridge while managing the impact of the works on road users in Lagos Island and adjoining areas.
