Lagos Begins Reconstruction Of Six Roads In Ajeromi-Ifelodun

The Lagos State Government has commenced the reconstruction of six roads across Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area and Ifelodun Local Council Development Area as part of efforts to improve transportation, access to markets and public facilities in the densely populated communities.

The projects, covering a combined 1,835 metres, were formally flagged off on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Nurudeen Agbaje.

The intervention includes the reconstruction of Asubiojo Street, measuring 320 metres, and Owoseni Street, 115 metres, in Ifelodun LCDA.

In Ajeromi-Ifelodun, the projects cover Cemetery Market Road, 250 metres; Isikalu Street, 560 metres; Alayabiagba Street, 320 metres; and Odofin Street, 270 metres.

According to the state government, the roads will be reconstructed with interlocking pavement, while covered drainage systems and solar-powered streetlights will also be provided.

The projects are expected to be completed within 12 months.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Agbaje said the intervention was part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s strategy of taking infrastructure development directly to communities rather than concentrating projects solely on major roads and urban corridors.

He said the projects were designed to deliver meaningful development at the grassroots, particularly in communities where poor local roads have continued to affect movement, commercial activities and access to essential services.

Agbaje said the reconstructed roads would improve connectivity within the benefiting communities, enhance access to markets and public facilities, reduce transportation costs and travel time, and create employment opportunities during the construction process.

He added that the provision of covered drainage was intended to strengthen the durability of the roads by addressing water-related challenges that could undermine the infrastructure.

The government said the roads were strategically selected because of their connections to residential areas, markets and other public facilities. Their rehabilitation is expected to ease the movement of people and goods while reducing the transportation difficulties associated with deteriorating local roads.

The planned installation of solar-powered streetlights is also expected to improve visibility and enhance security around the roads, particularly at night.

Agbaje said the projects were consistent with the administration’s broader grassroots development strategy under the T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda, which prioritises infrastructure, economic development and inclusive growth across Lagos State.

The six roads are being executed as one coordinated infrastructure intervention involving road reconstruction, drainage and street lighting, with the government expressing optimism that the projects would improve living conditions and stimulate economic activity in Ajeromi-Ifelodun and Ifelodun.
